Beyond the Books…

Anna’s 17-inch Ohana Sopranissimo ukulele with a holly-patterned strap, resting on colorful blankets
Seventeen inches of Ohana. Plenty of potential for mischief.

Anna doesn’t only write books and short stories. She also plays ukulele and sings filk, because apparently writing down the things in her head wasn’t sufficient. Some of them needed musical accompaniment.

Anna’s instrument of choice is the ukulele. Her subject matter depends on whatever has most recently encouraged her brain to misbehave. Dungeon Floor Number Nine is one result.

What the Hell Is “Filk”?

Take science fiction, fantasy, books, and the people who get entirely too enthusiastic about them. Give those people musical instruments. See what happens.

That’s a reasonable starting point.

Filk can mean putting new words to a familiar tune, but it also includes entirely original songs. Some are funny. Some are heartbreaking. Some require an explanation of the fictional universe involved before the audience understands why everyone else is laughing.

You don’t have to be a professional musician to join in. A willingness to sing, listen, or appreciate a particularly dreadful pun will get you a long way.

The mug makes a bold claim. Coffee helps.
